Jillian is starting to figure out crawling! OH NO! She almost did it for real the other day – got up on all fours and actually moved forward for about two “steps” before she realized what she was doing and plopped back down again. It won’t be long, though.

How much babyproofing is really necessary? If you ever get the One Step Ahead catalog, you’ll know that there is a gadget for everything you might ever want to protect your baby from. But how much of it is really, actually necessary? At what point do you kind of let the baby go and figure out what’s dangerous and what’s not?

We have to do SOME babyproofing because our house is Baby Danger Park, but I’m not going to go overboard with it all. Cabinet locks, definitely, and a toilet lock in her bathroom; baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, and electrical outlet covers, but aside from that and possibly some foam padding on the sharper corners of things, I don’t really know what else we are going to do. You have to let the baby learn what’s dangerous and what’s not, and if you totally protect everything and everyone, she’ll never figure that out.

We’ve already started the process of teaching Jillian what she can and can not do. Eating the vertical blinds is a no-no, but she is more than welcome to chew on the legs of the dining chairs. We are in for a very interesting next little while!
