Things I’ve Forgotten

I have been blessed/cursed with a pretty powerful memory. I remember things I wish I could forget, and I remember scads of things that I wish I could turn off once in awhile (80s song lyrics, I’m looking at you).

It occurred to me the other day that I no longer know how to set my alarm clock. Not without looking, anyway. I used to be able to set that thing in the dark, drunk, with my eyes closed. Now? I have to turn on the light and pick it up and make sure all the correct buttons are pressed and switches are switched and the time is correct. I’ve had this particular alarm clock since I won it in an essay contest in 1990. My alarm clock is old enough to buy beer.

And I’ve forgotten how to work it.
