The internet has let me down

We’re watching The Great Escape (for the sixth billionth time) and I am going insane trying to find out who plays the Hitler Youth kid on the train after the escape. I could swear it’s Richard Gere, but he’s not credited and his IMDB listing only goes back to 1973 or something.

And wasn’t Richard Gere is M*A*S*H? I know he was in the TV series, but I could SWEAR that he’s one of the MPs from the post-operation scene in Japan. He doesn’t have any lines but spends the 4 seconds or however long he’s on-screen chomping on his gum. I swear I’m not making this up – we’ve watched that movie hundreds of times.

This sort of thing drives me batty, which is why I had to start digging around on the internet. I haven’t found confirmation or a firm denial of either of these two theories of mine, and that is sad. The internet always delivers! ALWAYS!

Holy Myspace, Batman!

Wow. My brain just fell out.

I have a myspace page but I do almost nothing with it. I just figured it would be nice to have a presence there since SO MANY people are there these days.

I’m finding that it’s a great place for people from my deep, dark past to find me. (Hi Julian!)

Seriously – people are coming out of the damn woodwork over there, which I am finding extremely hilarious.

You’re so vain (you probably think this blog is about you)

my apologies to Carly Simon

I guess there’s no escaping the Thought Police, after all. We’ll just all have to get over ourselves and move on. See, I moved thishere blog to my own spanky domain, thinking that I would have a wee bit more control over who sees it and whatnot without having to go so far as to password-protect it. Apparently, it doesn’t matter which door I close on this side because there are sixteen doors on the other side that are wide open.

I thought about that for a couple of days and I decided that I’m perfectly okay with it. Part of the reason why I write on the web and not in my metric ton of spiral notebooks is because anyone can read it. This forces me to be more honest than I might otherwise be.

Honesty and truth are scary things for some people, but I have come to realize that those people are not my problem. I’m fully capable of recognzing and accepting my own faults – and boy oh boy do I have faults – and forgiving myself for them.

So bring it on, Thought Police. I can and will write about whatever strikes my fancy and if that’s a problem for you, then maybe you should think about getting a ladder and getting over yourself.

I know nothing about anything

I need to rent a tweenager or something to jazz up my Myspace page. I know precisely DICK about Myspace, and I only have a presence there because I … well, I don’t know why, exactly, except that everyone else in the galaxy seems to have a Myspace page.

I have this instead, and I don’t really know much about this stuff, either. I think it’s because I came of age on the cusp of teh internets so my understanding of it is much like my parents’ understanding of how to program the VCR. Theoretically, it shouldn’t be difficult, but in practice I’m all “Whuh?”

I hate to sound all crochety but back when my peeps and I were in school, nobody had cell phones or even pagers. Not even the drug dealers! We didn’t have texting and IM and all the other things that keep people in touch. Hell, I didn’t even have a PHONE, which was both my advantage and my disadvantage. We had to write actual notes on actual paper with actual pens in order to communicate with each other during the day. I fear that’s going to become a lost art.

My friend Mikie and I were so studly at writing notes to one another that we adapted the rune alphabet to our purposes. We had a series of teachers who just loved to intercept notes and read them aloud to the class, so the runic alphabet was a godsend for us. Teachers would get our notes, open them up, go “Whuh?” and just trash them. Saved us a huge amount of embarrassment, I tell you that!

I rather miss those days, and I am anxious to see what Jillian’s teen years are going to be like. Kids are getting cell phones and Myspace pages earlier and earlier and it all just seems like too much to me. If I have my way, Jillian won’t go anywhere NEAR teh internets until she’s a voting adult but I know that’s kind of extreme. And probably impossible.

I find it difficult to wrap my head around the fact that Jillian will grow up without ever knowing life without the Internet. Or cell phones. The mind, it boggles. Of course, I can’t imagine life without teh internets, but that’s because I’m hopelessly addicted. You can take away my TV, but if you take away my cable modem, I would really be fucked.

I’d probably get a lot more knitting done, though.

Sweet.

Wow – WordPress is amazingly easy to figure out, especially for a dork like myself.  I’ll be jealously guarding my free time in the next few days while I mess around with it.

Now if it could only help me clean out my laptop’s keyboard, I’d really be in love with it.

Six Kinds of Awesome

Well, well, well.  Here I am in my new home, courtesy of one Mr. Mike Hanley of Prodigious Design! Mike is also a long-time Imaginary Internet Friend of mine, and I’m so pleased and happy that he was able to set me up with my very own domain & website FINALLY.

I’m so lazy, I can’t believe it took me six years of blogging and one Stupid Incident to actually get myself up and running. But here we are, and here we shall stay!

Too bad it took me all day to figure out what I am doing with this.  The old brain just doesn’t click as fast as it used to.  It’s going to take some time for me to get my links updated and other fun things attached, so if you want me to link you, please leave a comment and I will get right on that!
